When John Mike and Marcia Cohen volunteered to drive their daughter’s car from Vancouver back to her Los Angeles home, they only planned to stop in Santa Barbara for a rest. But they left with a piece of property in nearby Toro Canyon. John Mike—a semi-retired architect—drew up a plan and took them to Robin Donaldson of Shubin + Donaldson. The result of the collaboration is a house whose concrete walls are massive in form, yet whose mahogany-framed windows are finely detailed. The cubist form is sleekly modern, but the living spaces are filled with color and collections that make them warm and contemporary.
